Using Your Phone Internationally

Hey there, traveller!

Staying connected with friends and family back home is vital as you explore new horizons. So here are a few ways to use your phone internationally without breaking the bank!

1. Check with your service provider.

  • Before travelling abroad, check the international roaming options from your current carrier. They can offer special international roaming packages.
  • You should understand the fees associated with international roaming as well.
  • All Canadian carriers are to notify you if you are roaming internationally and can only charge a maximum of $100 for roaming per billing cycle.

2. Embrace Wi-Fi where you can

  • There are many Wi-Fi hotspots in cafes, hotels, restaurants, and public places.
  • Use apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, FaceTime, or Google Chat to stay connected with family back home.
  • Be cautious with ‘Free Public Wi-Fi’. These can often be used to access your personal and sensitive information.

3. Consider a Local or eSIM Card.

  • Pick up a local prepaid SIM card once you are in the country. This will allow you to access local cell networks without the roaming fee. As a bonus, it will give you a local number when you meet locals.
  • eSIM. The majority of modern phones support eSIM, which means you don’t have to swap physical SIM cards when you enter a new country.
  • Ensure your phone is unlocked from your carrier to allow for international travel. Every carrier can unlock your device with ease, and there should not be a charge.

4. Download Offline Maps and Apps

  • You can download Google Maps for offline use.

5. Manage Your Data

  • Turn off data roaming. To prevent unexpected charges, switch off data roaming in your phone settings.
  • Use Airplane Mode. When you are not using your phone at all, set it to airplane more. This turns off the signal and save both battery and data.
  • Monitor your apps. Some of your apps use data in the background. Close out of them completely when not using them.
  • Understand that video and GPS will use up more data quicker than text or images.
  • Your experience is all about creating unforgettable memories, and staying connected should be a breeze. If you have any questions or need a hand, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always here for you!
