Working Holiday Abroad in Agriculture: From Canada to Three Countries
Paytten, a passionate rancher from Alberta, Canada, grew up on a working ranch and always knew she wanted to expand her knowledge of the agriculture industry. Curious about how farming and ranching are done around the world, she began looking for opportunities to gain hands-on experience working abroad in agriculture.
She attended Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta, where she earned a Diploma in Animal Science Technology. She then transferred to the University of Alberta(UofA) to pursue a Bachelor of Agriculture, majoring in Animal Science. While studying at UofA, Paytten attended an information session about working abroad and that’s when she discovered the A-Way To Work Outbound Program.

Gaining Agricultural Experience Abroad in the United States
Paytten’s first placement took her to the United States, where she spent four months in a small town in eastern Washington. There, she learned about cow/calf operations and the production of export hay. She was able to contribute to the farm by assisting with pregnancy checks, vaccinations, and the moving and sorting of cattle. Her host family welcomed her with open arms, taking her on adventures to the Oregon coast and skiing in Idaho
Working with Horses in Ireland
From the U.S., Paytten continued her journey abroad to Ireland, where she spent two months working at a riding school. In her time there she assisted instructors and helped prepare the horses for lessons. She also assisted special needs participants and took them for small horse treks around the equestrian center. Her host family embodied the warmth of Irish culture; lively, welcoming, and full of personality. They treated her like one of their own and introduced her to local traditions and everyday life in Ireland.

A Summer in Sweden’s Dressage Industry
Paytten’s final stop was Sweden, where she worked at a dressage barn throughout the summer months. She lived on-site at the arena and woke up each day ready to tackle new challenges. She spent her days caring for horses, supporting daily barn operations and building her equestrian skills. During her time in Europe, she also took the opportunity to visit relatives in Norway and reconnect with her roots
Bringing New Skills Back Home to Canada
Through her working abroad experience, Paytten gained valuable agricultural knowledge that she brought back to her family’s 120-year-old ranch in Alberta. One key takeaway was the use of ultrasound technology for pregnancy testing. After seeing its benefits abroad, she suggested implementing it at home. Paytten also gained greater confidence in operating equipment and learning all aspects of the business, even those traditionally seen as “not for women.”

A Life-Changing Working Holiday Experience
As an adventurous and curious individual, Paytten’s experience with the Outbound Program was invaluable. She made connections with like-minded individuals, learned new practices, and had once-in-a-lifetime experiences that she will carry with her always. So whether you’re a rancher, farmer or just someone with an adventurous spirit, the IRE Outbound Program may be just what you need to broaden your horizons and learn new skills.
